About the city

Domagnano is one of the nine municipalities, or "castles", that make up the small European country of San Marino. It is located in the central-eastern part of the country and covers an area of approximately 6.5 square kilometers (2.5 square miles). As of 2021, Domagnano has a population of around 3,000 inhabitants. The name "Domagnano" is believed to have its origins in the Latin word "dominus," which means "master." The town's history can be traced back to the Roman era, as evidenced by the remains of an ancient road and other archaeological findings within the territory. San Marino itself is known for being one of the smallest and oldest republics in the world. It is nestled between the more prominent Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche on the northeastern side of the Italian Peninsula. As a result, Domagnano shares its borders with the Italian cities of Rimini and Riccione. The castle's economy is primarily driven by tourism and agriculture, with residents cultivating grapes for wine production and growing olives for olive oil. Additionally, there are small-scale manufacturing operations in Domagnano, such as textiles and clothing. San Marino is well-known for its picturesque landscapes and historic sites, which attract tourists from around the world. In Domagnano, notable landmarks include the Church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist), built in the 19th century, and the remains of an ancient fortress called Castello di Domagnano. As a microstate, San Marino enjoys a high standard of living and has one of the highest GDP per capita in Europe. The country's government is a parliamentary democracy with two captains regent who serve as joint heads of state for six months at a time. This unique form of governance has helped maintain political stability over the centuries, making Domagnano and San Marino an attractive destination for both tourists and businesses alike.
